SANDBOX designed this architecturally inspiring $2.6M residence by composing familiar alpine forms and materials, such as steeply pitched roofs, wood and stone, in a fresh and clean way, using less conventional elements such as corrugated rusted and flat-panel steel to complete the unique vision. Designed for a stunning view lot in Alpine Meadows, California, full-height window walls and expansive deck & patio areas, complete with a sunken spa on the West side, allow the owner and his guests to fully appreciate the panoramic views of Alpine Meadows Ski Area and the dramatic canyon in which the house sits. The home offers 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, Great Room, Dining Room, gourmet Kitchen, Media Room and Wine Room in the Main House, with an additional full guest suite above the detached Garage. With jaw-dropping features such as full-glass walls that look out on the ski area canyon, a 12 foot long ridge skylight, vaulted ceilings, oversized timber beams, and a massive stone fireplace in the Great Room, the inside of the home is nothing short of spectacular. The light-filled Kitchen (above) is equally inspiring – fully equipped and with views in all directions – the perfect place to entertain! Photo by Vance Fox Photography.
Situated on a steep mountainside, the house works with the natural topography, climbing up the hillside in high-style to grab maximum sun and views. Upon entry to the Main House, guests are met with vaulted wood ceilings soaring above a dramatic staircase (above left) that leads them up to the main living spaces of the home. Unique, custom details are prevalent throughout the home, such as the oversized sliding barn door (above right), constructed of reclaimed wood and steel, that is used to close off the guest bedrooms from the main social spaces. The owner has fantastic views in several directions from virtually every room of the house - even the Master Bath has panoramic views! Photo of Master Bath by Vance Fox (above) shows the spa tub and vanity with a window wall capturing views of the infamous Munchkins Chutes and surrounding mountains.
A separate Garage/Guest House sits below the Main House, providing easy access from the street. It is clad entirely in stone and reclaimed wood salvaged from an old turn-of-the-century mining flume. A meandering landscaped stair constructed of native boulders winds alongside the structure, providing access to the Main House.
