The 4,000 square foot Williams Residence was designed by SANDBOX as a multi-generational family retreat for all seasons. Situated on a south facing lot with fantastic sun exposure, privacy and ski area views, the home is predominantly single-story by design, and spreads out to take best advantage of its wonderful site. The primary master suite is located in a semi-detached ‘cottage’ at the far end of the residence to give it a special sense of place and privacy. The interior spaces of the home are designed to have a strong connection to the outdoors through the use of abundant window glazing, multiple terraces and decks. There is a mix of both covered and uncovered terrace areas to allow for sun or shade at varying times of the day. View of South/Rear Elevation of residence (above), showing the large sun terrace, accessed by the large sliding glass doors of the Great Room, as well as from the dual lower level master suites. The terrace also features a firepit and sunken spa. Photo by Vance Fox.
Most of the interior spaces of the home have vaulted timber ceilings, creating a dramatic and spacious ‘mountain lodge’ feel, as is evident in the Great Room (above). Photo by Vance Fox.
SANDBOX wanted to root the home in its natural environment in every way possible, and thus designed a custom connection detail to tie the Entry Porch roof support posts into large boulders that were found on-site (above left). The combination of indigenous Tahoe mountain materials such as wood and stone on the exterior of the home also carries over to the interior, but in a more refined application, as is evident in the photo of a bathroom (above right), with an artful combination of natural stone tile, slab counter and wood casework at play. The Williams’ Kitchen (above) flows openly to both the Dining Room and the Great Room, encouraging social interaction. The stone floor and Alder cabinets of the Kitchen meld beautifully with the wideplank Hickory flooring of the Great Room, with Fir ceilings and beams tying together both spaces completely. There is nothing more relaxing than the view from the Master Bedroom (above), where the owners can look out from their bed into the pristine forest with a fire crackling in the fireplace! Photo by Vance Fox.
