Completed in late Summer of 2010, the Huesby Family Retreat sits on a sunny view lot in Martis Camp, with panoramic views of the slopes of Northstar Resort and nearby mountain crests. At 4,200 square feet in size, SANDBOX designed the home to accommodate two brothers and their families comfortably, and to take best advantage of its very unique setting. An abundance of windows, sliding glass doors, decks and terraces, spill out from virtually every room, serving to capture the warm south sun and views, and to create a strong connection with nature. The covered, open-air Fireside Terrace will be the perfect place to relax by a crackling fire with friends and family over a glass of wine at day’s end and watch the sun set. There is also an ample uncovered terrace area, with space for some Adirondack chairs and an outdoor family dinner, and a sunken spa to soothe sore muscles after an active day in Tahoe! The palette of exterior materials used on the home is equally stunning and unique, with a mix of locally quarried stone and reclaimed wood siding, sourced from an old railroad trestle bridge that once ran across The Great Salt Lake, and also from the structure of an abandoned pickle factory in Utah. In addition to the benefit of resource conservation, there is both a rich history and a richness in color and texture embodied in this wood. Inside, the Huesby Residence, built by Mark Tanner Construction, features a very large, flowing Kitchen-Dining-Great Room space, three master suites, a bunk room for the kids, a large rec room with a pool table, and an office for two. Many of the spaces have vaulted beamed ceilings and are finished with reclaimed timbers and stone to match the rich exterior. Virtually every space in the home has abundant windows to capture sun and views, as well as direct access to either the terrace areas or a private deck. The Dining Room, shown in the above photo by Vance Fox, has accordion-style glass doors that fold completely open and stack out of the way, connecting the indoor space to the large terrace on the south side, for a true open-air dining experience in the summer months.
The two primary master suites both feature fireplaces and sitting areas with large window walls – cozy settings to read a book and appreciate the fantastic view! Each suite also has direct access to a private terrace and the hot tub. Photo (above) by Vance Fox showing one of the master suites.
