Located at the very top of the Martis Camp community, the Little Residence has the best of both worlds – grand Martis Valley views out the front of the homesite and private, Forest Service wilderness out the back. SANDBOX as such designed the home to take best advantage of both, with windows and terraces spilling out onto the two sides of the home equally. Photo of the Rear Elevation of the home (above) by Vance Fox, shows the outdoor dining terrace and firepit lounging area.
Clad in reclaimed barnwood, the home was completed in 2014 and built by Structerra. With lower pitched roofs and exposed timber detailing, the home has a touch of a California Bungalow/Craftsman feel. The guest master and main master suites are both split-off from the main body of the home – connected, but with almost the feeling of individual cottages, for privacy and a special sense of place. The Master Bath, as shown in the above photo by Vance Fox, is deliberately light and bright, with painted cabinets and lighter tile selections – a cheery way to wake up each morning!
The Chardonnay Lounge at the rear of the home is a fantastic indoor-outdoor room constructed entirely of stone. Accessed off of the terrace, it features a fireplace and TV, where the owners, who dabble in the wine business, can escape for a glass of wine by the fire. Lots of personal touches and custom details were put into the home, such as the rustic reclaimed wood barn door on the Chardonnay Lounge, shown in the above Vance Fox image. Originally coming from a commercial fishing background in Washington State, the owners salvaged all of the hardwood flooring from planks from some of their old fishing vessels.
Custom built-in cabinets and the banquette of the Breakfast Nook, shown above in the photo by Vance Fox, create a fun and highly functional kitchen. The Nook captures the morning sun from the East and sweeping views of the mountains and Martis Valley below.
