Jumping at the chance to design something fresh & different, and for the best site in all of Squaw Valley, SANDBOX designed this mountain-contemporary home in the Spring of 2011 on a fast-track for a Summer construction start. Created for a local stone mason and his family, this 3,800 square foot home features dramatic floor-to-ceiling window walls looking down the entire meadow, with an unobstructed, panoramic view of Squaw Valley Resort. Photo of partial Living Room (above) by Vance Fox.
The house is equally as stunning as the view! Photo (above) by Vance Fox showing the front entry elevation, with its clean, contemporary lines and fenestration, melding exposed steel with mountain materials of native stone and wood.
An open flowing floor plan adds to the visual drama, sense of spaciousness, and the opportunity for family interaction. In the photo (above) by Vance Fox, the Media Room has glass on two walls, allowing one to close-off the room for sound, yet still keep the visual connection from one space to the other.
As one would expect in the house of a prominent local mason, stonework is a theme. The photo (above) by Vance Fox shows the gorgeous native stone of the Entry Foyer, looking back from the Living Room.
You simply do not get a better view than the one from the Johansen Dining Room, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors on three sides, spilling out onto the meadow and looking at all of Squaw Valley! Photo by Vance Fox.
View from the Media Room through the glass walls, looking back to the sculptural custom open-style steel & timber staircase.
A dramatic reclaimed timber and steel bridge, as is seen in the photo above by Vance Fox, connects the kids' rooms to the master.
The view, as one takes the journey across the bridge to/from the Master, is spectacular! Photo by Vance Fox.
Ascending and desceding the stair is a jaw-dropping experience, as is relaxing in the tub of the Master Bath with the full view of Squaw Valley. Photos above by Vance Fox.
