SANDBOX designed this grand home to be the signature residence for the Creekside Estates luxury mountain community, near Lake Tahoe, California. Sitting on a rocky promontory, this $4.2M 5 bedroom/5.5 bath, 5,400 square foot residence has views of the ski runs at Squaw Valley Ski Resort from virtually every room. On the outside, big heavy timbers, roughsawn Cedar & Redwood siding and copious amounts of stone give the house a rugged, timeless grandeur. The entry procession into the home is a grand experience, beginning with a stone walk leading up to a sheltering porch, covered by a heavy-timber gable roof and featuring a large custom-crafted wooden door set deep into the stone wall (above left). Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a towering custom iron elevator in the Foyer (above middle), which takes guests up to the equally impressive Great Room on the main level (above right). A custom wine room finished with reclaimed French Oak wine barrel staves, as well as a ski/locker room are also accessible off of the Entry Foyer. Photos by Vance Fox.
The vaulted Great Room, with its soaring wooden ceiling, heavy timber work and glass window wall looking out to the ski area, is anchored by a massive double-sided stone fireplace – one of four fireplaces in the home. Constructed of large, locally sourced Sierra Granite boulders, it was painstakingly assembled by skilled masons. It serves as the heart of the home and creates a warm and inviting feeling for the primary social space of the residence. The floor plan is open by design, allowing social interaction between the main living spaces and creating the feeling of a large mountain lodge. Perched above the Great Room is a reading loft that captures the ski area views and also serves to access the secondary mater suite. Photo of Great Room (above) by Vance Fox.
The Dining Room (above) is easily accessible from both the Great Room and Kitchen, yet has a private, cozy feel, sharing the large stone fireplace with the Great Room on the opposite side. A honed granite buffet/serving counter flanked by heavy-timber posts serves as subtle separation from the Kitchen. There is easily room enough to accommodate 10 or more people at dinner parties. The Kitchen is a chef/entertainer’s dream, featuring a 60” commercial gas range, 60” SubZero fridge/freezer combo, double ovens, double dishwashers and ample counter prep space. There is abundant cabinetry constructed of Alder for storage, as well as a large walk-in pantry conveniently adjacent. An informal eating counter bar created from a thick, solid honed granite slab allows for social and cooking time to be shared. Photo by Vance Fox.
The spacious, vaulted, primary Master Bedroom sits on the quietest side of the home, separate from all of the other spaces. Featuring a private deck with view of the ski area, a stone fireplace, 50” plasma tv, walk-in closet and sitting area, all connected to a sumptuous master bath, it is a worthy space for the deserving owner. The master bath is located off of the adjoining Master Bedroom. Views from the spa tub look out onto a private and especially scenic corner of the property, strewn with large boulders. Separately, a glass-enclosed oversized shower, extra-long double vanity and a toilet closet are ready to serve. View of the Master Bath above by Vance Fox.
The Bunk Room (photo above by Vance Fox) is intended to serve the kids and can accommodate four or more. With a tiered system of custom-built wooden bunks, a compete entertainment system, as well as access to the rear patio and hot tub, the kids will disappear for hours!
The Spa Bathroom (above) serves the Media Room, as well as the Sauna and outdoor Hot Tub. It also exemplifies the high level of design detailing & craftsmanship prevalent throughout the home. Photo above by Vance Fox.
