This 4 bedroom/4.5 bath $2.4M residence was designed for a site near the ski resort of Squaw Valley, California and takes its name from the colorful rock outcropping that overlooks it. SANDBOX based its design around the dramatic "Painted Rock" as a focal point. With three levels, a timber bridge connecting the upper bedrooms, a glass entry tower and sweeping views, this home is no less dramatic and surely sets itself apart! View of Front Elevation (above). The home features an abundance of entertaining space for large family gatherings or ski weekend dinner parties. With commercial grade appliances in the Kitchen, a formal Dining Room adjacent, and a vaulted Great Room with a large stone fireplace (above), not to mention the Family Room and Recreational Room (not shown), this home is every entertainer's dream! As with all of the homes it designs, SANDBOX attempts to create a strong relationship with, and appreciation of, the outdoors through a combination of elements such as extensive glazing and the creation of outdoor living spaces. From the meandering stone path leading up the hill to the entry, to the natural landscaping of the back patio comprised of stacked boulders and a colorful palette of native vegetation, the house is well-connected with its environment. The Dining Room (above) is surrounded on two sides with windows to bring the outdoors in. Photo by Zikas Photography.
With an eye towards custom detailing, SANDBOX put extensive thought into the design of every element of the home. For example, rather than simply connecting the upper level bedrooms with a conventional hallway, SANDBOX designed a dramatic timber bridge under a vaulted ceiling to connect the upstairs bedroom wings, and thereby leaving the view open to the Great Room below. Use of materials is critical to not only function, but also to the ‘feel’ of the home. In this residence, SANDBOX wanted to create the feeling of a cozy, rugged and timeless mountain lodge. The use of oversized timbers, Cedar, Redwood, Alder and stone, both inside and out, help to achieve this goal. The end result was a success, as is evident in the photo above of the partial Great Room and fireplace, where one can imagine sitting by the fire on a snowy Winter’s day. Photo courtesy of Tom Zikas.
