The project for the Connery Residence called for an extensive remodel to an aging and plain Tahoe Donner house. The clients wanted to add more functionality and space for their growing family, capture more natural light and views, as well as to re-make the entire home — inside and out — to suit their aesthetic. All of this was also to be accomplished with an eye towards eco-consciousness. The result is a home that has gained 1,000 square feet of new living, an expanded garage, increased energy efficiency, utilized the existing structure and salvaged materials, and has gained an entirely new look! The exterior is clad predominantly with reclaimed Picklewood siding — material salvaged from an old pickle factory. As accent materials, native stone, rusted Corten steel, Cedar and gunmetal gray Hardy Plank siding were also used, resulting in a mix of Tahoe Rustic and Rocky Mountain mining structure themes — a unique aesthetic unlike anything in Tahoe Donner! To gain space and capture more sun and views, SANDBOX punched out large gable dormers in both the Great Room and Kitchen, as well as added windows throughout the home. The Great Room dormer is predominantly glass, adding spectacular views, an abundance of natural light, as well as more floor area for better seating around the new stone fireplace. Reclaimed Picklewood was added to the back wall to tie in an element of the exterior. Photo (above) by Vance Fox showing the expanded Great Room. See Page 7 for the ‘before’ shot of former Great Room in same location.
The clients are a young family from the San Francisco Bay Area who wanted the inside of the home to be cozy, but ‘fresh’, thus modern elements such as stainless steel, Ceasarstone counters and glass tile, mix with natural woods and stones throughout.
